Imagine you lost a loved one. Would you accept it and move on? Or, if given the opportunity, would you sacrifice everything to have that person back?
Seventeen-year-old Megan Godmere lost her mother and brother in a car accident when she was seven years old. In that moment, she also lost her voice – she hasn’t spoken a word to anyone in ten years. She won’t even talk to her dad or grandmother.
One day Megan discovers a crawl space in the basement of her house. She goes inside and emerges to find that most of her house has been destroyed. Along with many other houses in her neighborhood. When she explores this bombed-out parallel world – which is teeming with human-sized cockroaches and spidery helicopters that can climb buildings – she learns that Prohibition as we know it never happened. That is, it never happened until just a few years ago, igniting a civil war that’s torn the United States apart.
On top of all that, it turns out that, in this reality, Megan and her father died in that car accident, and her mother and brother lived. Desperate to have her mom and brother back, Megan sets off on a road trip across a treacherous, war-torn landscape to find them.
