Then a grain caravan vanishes from the safest route in the region.

When it returns, the drivers swear they never turned around—even though they are traveling in the wrong direction.

Soon buried route stones are waking beneath the Beginner Road. Forgotten paths overlap modern highways. Dungeon creatures appear where no dungeon route exists. Tutorial graduates are delivered to compatible receivers that have no room for them. Across the frontier, an ancient network has begun comparing the world that exists with the world it remembers.

And it does not always agree with what civilization built on top of it.

Ruan joins an expedition spanning farm country, dungeon cities, flooded river settlements, mountain passes, guild halls, receiver stations, and the First Tower itself. To keep people moving, he will have to learn that a road is more than stone and distance.

It is local knowledge. Capacity. Authority. History. Purpose. Trust.

And when all of those disagree, being technically correct can still get someone killed.
